What is MRgFUS?

Simply imagine being able to remove the seeds of an apple from inside without having to cut it open!

MRgFUS stands for magnetic resonance tomography-guided focused ultrasound therapy. It is an innovative and particularly mild procedure for treating uterine fibroids. It involves combining high-energy ultrasound (for therapy) with magnetic resonance tomography (for planning, controlling and monitoring).
The use of magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) not only enables specific treatment to be carried out on the uterine fibroids, but also allows the temperature in the target tissue to be monitored and adapted in real time. This enables the doctor to continually enhance the treatment without having to interrupt it.

How does MRgFUS work?

The specific concentration of ultrasound waves on the inside of the body makes it possible to heat the fibroid with pinpoint precision. A local temperature of 60 to 80 degrees Celsius is generated here with the fibroid being melted one point at a time and destroyed, while the surrounding tissue is spared treatment and remains undamaged.

The fibroid shrinks and usually does not cause any discomfort. The dead tissue will largely be removed from the patient's immune system over the course of the next few months.
