Process of MRgFUS-treatment

Step 1:

Pre-examination of patient by personal gynecologist to verify if fibroid is present and if fibroid is the cause for symptoms

and/ or:
Pre-examination of patient by special fibroid gynecologist at FUS-Center to verify if fibroid is present and if fibroid is the cause for symptoms

Step 2:

Examination of patient with MRI by special fibroid radiologist at FUS-Center to verify if preconditions for successfull treatment with MRgFUS are met. MRI images deliver 3-dimensionale images of tumour in the uterus, which are the basis for treatment planning

Step 3:

Now the real, outpatient treatment is carried out within a time-frame of 2-3 hours:
The patient lies in the MRI on her belly on a special MRgFUS treatment table. Some sedatives and pain medication will help the patient to relax but stay conscious. The fibroid is now targeted with high-intensity ultrasound energy and destroyed bit-by-bit. The thermal imaging feedback of the MRI allows the physician to monitor and adjust the treatment to ensure that the targeted tumour is fully treated and all other tissue is avoided, and to determine the level of heating of the inside of the body. After the treatment the patient must rest for 1-2 hours.

Immediate post-examination of patient by radiologist with new MRI images in FUS Center to verify the results of the treatment.
With consultation, the patient might be admitted as an inpatient for 1 night. The body disposes of destroyed tissue as part of normal function within the next 4-12 weeks. After 1 or 2 days, the patient usually returns to her daily routine.

Step 4:

Post-examination of patient by personal gynecologist, to monitor the natural discharge of the remnants of the fibroid.

or:
Post-examination of patient by special fibroid gynecologist in FUS-Center, to to monitor the natural discharge of the remnants of the fibroid.
